{"id":737,"date":"2011-04-16T13:27:48","date_gmt":"2011-04-16T20:27:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=737"},"modified":"2011-04-16T13:27:48","modified_gmt":"2011-04-16T20:27:48","slug":"saudi-protests-against-bahrain-invasion-repression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=737","title":{"rendered":"Saudi protests against Bahrain invasion, repression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saudi protests against Bahrain invasion, repression<br \/>\nBy Bill Van Auken<br \/>\n16 April 2011<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds protested in Saudi Arabia Friday demanding an end to the Saudi occupation of Bahrain and the release of the dictatorial kingdom\u2019s political prisoners.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second day of mass protests, which have been concentrated in the predominantly Shiite eastern region of the country, the center of Saudi Arabia\u2019s oilfields and refineries.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s demonstrations also saw protesters rally outside the interior ministry in Riyadh in support of individuals they referred to as the \u201cforgotten political prisoners,\u201d who in some cases have been imprisoned for as long as 16 years without charges or trials for daring to demand political rights.<\/p>\n<p>The larger demonstrations took place in the eastern city of Qatif and nearby villages, where demonstrators marched through the streets carrying banners and candles to denounce the Saudi military\u2019s intervention in neighboring Bahrain and to demand the release of over 100 people, including children, who have been arrested in the area during protests over the last month.<\/p>\n<p>In the village of Awwamiya, near Qatif, scores of women demonstrated, chanting for the release of political prisoners and denouncing the regime\u2019s suppression of women\u2019s rights. The monarchy has rejected widespread demands that women be allowed to vote and run in municipal elections set for next September.<\/p>\n<p>While massed security forces closed in on the demonstrators, there were no reported clashes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBahrain, we will respond to your call,\u201d the demonstrators chanted in solidarity with Bahrain\u2019s predominantly Shia population, which is facing intense repression, with scores having been killed, at least 800 imprisoned, and several detainees tortured to death.
