1. Sun Tzu said:\u00a0 In the operations of war,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 where there are in the field a thousand swift chariots,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 as many heavy chariots, and a hundred thousand
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 mail-clad soldiers, with provisions enough to carry them
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 a thousand li, the expenditure at home and at the front,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 including entertainment of guests, small items such as
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 glue and paint, and sums spent on chariots and armor,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will reach the total of a thousand ounces of silver per day.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Such is the cost of raising an army of 100,000 men.<\/p>\n

2. When you engage in actual fighting, if victory
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 is long in coming, then men’s weapons will grow dull and
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 their ardor will be damped.\u00a0 If you lay siege to a town,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 you will exhaust your strength.<\/p>\n

3. Again, if the campaign is protracted, the resources
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of the State will not be equal to the strain.<\/p>\n

4. Now, when your weapons are dulled, your ardor damped,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 your strength exhausted and your treasure spent,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 other chieftains will spring up to take advantage
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 of your extremity.\u00a0 Then no man, however wise,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 will be able to avert the consequences that must ensue.<\/p>\n

5. Thus, though we have heard of stupid haste in war,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cleverness has never been seen associated with long delays.<\/p>\n

6. There is no instance of a country having benefited
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 from prolonged warfare.<\/p>\n
