{"id":3509,"date":"2011-10-12T17:30:17","date_gmt":"2011-10-13T00:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=3509"},"modified":"2011-10-12T17:30:17","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T00:30:17","slug":"the-manama-paper-a-way-forward-for-the-bahraini-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=3509","title":{"rendered":"The Manama Paper, a way forward for the Bahraini People"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bahrain opposition demands elected govt<\/strong><br \/>\nOctober 12, 2011 &#8211; Shia Post<\/p>\n<p>DUBAI \u2014 (AFP) Bahraini opposition groups called in a new declaration on Wednesday for an elected government and for ending discrimination against the Shiite majority in order to break the political stalemate.<\/p>\n<p>In \u201cThe Manama Paper\u201d, a document described as Bahrain\u2019s \u201cpath to freedom and democracy,\u201d the five groups, including the largest Shiite formation Al-Wefaq, called for restructuring the political system while \u201cpreserving the monarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that Bahrain resembles any non-democratic country; it is a copy of (ousted) Zine El Abidine (bin Ali\u2019s) Tunisia, (deposed Hosni) Mubarak\u2019s Egypt, or (embattled President) Ali Abdullah Saleh\u2019s Yemen,\u201d said the document, presented at a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly seven months after a deadly crackdown on a month-long pro-democracy protest, the groups repeated their demand for \u201can elected government\u201d in the tiny island nation that is ruled by the Al-Khalifa Sunni dynasty.<\/p>\n<p>King Hamad\u2019s uncle, Prince Khalifa bin Salman, who is widely despised among the Shiites, has been prime minister for 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>The list of demands also includes \u201ca fair electoral system,\u201d redrawing constituencies to guarantee better representation and \u201ca legislative authority with a single chamber that would have exclusive legislative, regulatory, financial and political authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the elected chamber, the current parliament also has the all-appointed Shura Council, which can override legislation from the lower chamber.<\/p>\n<p>A chief complaint of the opposition is the naturalisation of foreigners \u201con political grounds,\u201d suspected as being an attempt to change the demographic balance in favour of the Sunnis.<\/p>\n<p>The document demanded an end to this policy as well as reversing \u201call kinds of tribal, sectarian and political discrimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also called for a international guarantees for a \u201cgenuine dialogue\u201d after the opposition pulled out in July of a high-profile national dialogue called for by King Hamad to discuss reforms in the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call upon the international community to support the reformists within the government and the removal of the extremists from the political scene through political means,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities say 24 people, including four policemen, were killed in a month of unrest.
