{"id":14681,"date":"2012-12-10T07:50:57","date_gmt":"2012-12-10T14:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=14681"},"modified":"2012-12-10T07:50:57","modified_gmt":"2012-12-10T14:50:57","slug":"zainab-alkhawaja-sentenced-to-one-month-for-entering-pearl-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=14681","title":{"rendered":"Zainab AlKhawaja sentenced to One Month for &#8220;entering Pearl Square&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bahrain sentences activist\u2019s daughter to jail<\/strong><br \/>\nLiliana Mihaila &#8211; 10 December, 2012 -Egypt Daily News<\/p>\n<p>Dubai (AFP) \u2013 A Bahraini court on Monday sentenced the daughter of prominent opposition activist Hadi Al-Khawaja to one month in jail for taking part in an unauthorised demonstration, her lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>Zainab Al-Khawaja, the eldest of the Shi\u2019a rights activist\u2019s daughters, was found guilty of entering the \u201cprohibited area\u201d of Pearl Square, the main symbol of 2011 protests crushed by security forces, on February 12, the lawyer said.<\/p>\n<p>She also was fined 100 dinars ($258).<\/p>\n<p>Her lawyers disputed the charges, saying there was \u201cno formal decision declaring that Pearl Square is a forbidden area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zainab Al-Khawaja, whose father is serving a life sentence for plotting against the state, has faced justice on several occasions already this year.<\/p>\n<p>In October, she was freed after serving a two-month jail term for destroying government property.<\/p>\n<p>The judiciary accused her of tearing apart a portrait of King Hamad during detention, according to Amnesty International.<\/p>\n<p>In May, she served a one-month prison sentence for assaulting a police officer.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain came under strong criticism from international human rights organisations over last year\u2019s deadly crackdown on the protests, led by the majority Shi\u2019a in the Sunni-ruled kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>An international panel commissioned by King Hamad to probe the government\u2019s clampdown found that excessive force and torture had been used against protesters and detainees.   &#8230;<\/p>\n<div class=\"igit_tsb_button\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.crookedbough.com%2F%3Fp%3D14681&amp;text=Zainab+AlKhawaja+sentenced+to+One+Month+for+%22entering+Pearl+Square%22&amp;count=horizontal&amp;via=\" style=\"\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bahrain sentences activist\u2019s daughter to jail Liliana Mihaila &#8211; 10 December, 2012 -Egypt Daily News Dubai (AFP) \u2013 A Bahraini court on Monday sentenced the daughter of prominent opposition activist Hadi Al-Khawaja to one month in jail for taking part in an unauthorised demonstration, her lawyer said.
