{"id":10944,"date":"2012-07-19T10:51:30","date_gmt":"2012-07-19T17:51:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=10944"},"modified":"2012-07-19T11:04:35","modified_gmt":"2012-07-19T18:04:35","slug":"un-vetos-leaves-western-gangsters-to-go-it-alone-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=10944","title":{"rendered":"UN Veto leaves Western Gangsters &#8220;to go it alone&#8221; in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Russia, China veto third UN Syria resolution<\/strong><br \/>\n19 July, 2012 &#8211; Al Akhbar<\/p>\n<p>Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that sought to impose sanctions and open the door for military action against Syria&#8217;s President Bashar al-Assad.<\/p>\n<p>It was the third time in nine months that the two powers have used their vetoes as permanent members of the 15-nation council to block Western-backed resolutions on Syria.<\/p>\n<p>There were 11 votes in favor, Russia and China&#8217;s votes against and two abstentions \u2013 Pakistan and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The text, backed by the United States, France, Germany and Portugal, called for non-military sanctions under Chapter VII of the UN Charter if Assad did not withdraw heavy weapons from Syrian cities in 10 days.<\/p>\n<p>Russia had said it could not accept Chapter VII as it was wary of foreign interference in Syria.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow&#8217;s UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin said after the veto that the resolution sought to &#8220;open the path to the pressure of sanctions and further to external military involvement in Syrian domestic affairs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their calculations to use the UN Security Council to further their plans to put their pressure on sovereign states will not pass,&#8221; Churkin added in an acrimonious council debate on Syria after the veto.<\/p>\n<p>The West and Russia have been at fierce odds over the Syrian crisis, with Moscow and Beijing concerned Western powers are seeking to exploit the violence to further their interests.<\/p>\n<p>Syria has been a staunch ally of Russia, hosting Moscow&#8217;s only naval base in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<p>Western powers have backed rebels waging the fight against Assad, deepening the division with Russia over the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Last year a similar resolution was used to justify a NATO bombing campaign in Libya to bring down the government of Muammar Gaddafi.<\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s envoy to the UN Mark Lyall Grant, whose country took the lead in writing the resolution, said he was &#8220;appalled&#8221; by the veto.   <a href=\"http:\/\/english.al-akhbar.com\/content\/russia-china-veto-syria-resolution\" target=\"_blank\">&#8230;source<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"igit_tsb_button\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.crookedbough.com%2F%3Fp%3D10944&amp;text=UN+Veto+leaves+Western+Gangsters+%22to+go+it+alone%22+in+Syria&amp;count=horizontal&amp;via=\" style=\"\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russia, China veto third UN Syria resolution 19 July, 2012 &#8211; Al Akhbar Russia and China on Thursday vetoed a UN Security Council resolution that sought to impose sanctions and open the door for military action against Syria&#8217;s President Bashar al-Assad.
