{"id":10302,"date":"2012-05-30T15:37:48","date_gmt":"2012-05-30T22:37:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=10302"},"modified":"2012-05-30T15:37:48","modified_gmt":"2012-05-30T22:37:48","slug":"bahraini-activists-ask-appeals-court-for-freedom-al-khawaja-refuses-to-attend-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crookedbough.com\/?p=10302","title":{"rendered":"Bahraini activists ask appeals court for freedom &#8211; al-Khawaja refuses to attend hearing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Bahraini activists ask appeals court for freedom<\/strong><br \/>\n29 May, 2012 &#8211; Agence France Presse<\/p>\n<p>DUBAI: Two Bahraini opposition activists facing life terms for plotting to overthrow the Sunni monarchy told an appeals court on Tuesday they were &#8220;tortured&#8221; in detention and asked to be freed, their lawyers said.<\/p>\n<p>Hasan Musheime and Abdel Jalil al-Sankis, both Shiites, testified that they were &#8220;prisoners of conscience&#8221; and called on the judge to release them, one of their lawyers told AFP on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, prominent Shiite opposition activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who also faces a life sentence, refused to attend Tuesday&#8217;s hearing which came just one day after he said he would end his 110-day hunger strike.<\/p>\n<p>All three men were arrested during last year&#8217;s mid-March crackdown on Bahrain&#8217;s Arab Spring-inspired anti-government protests.<\/p>\n<p>The activists are among 13 prisoners whose cases were being heard on Tuesday. All 13 defendants, seven of whom face life terms, are being retried in a civil appeals court.<\/p>\n<p>The next hearing is set for June 5, according to lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2011, a specially formed tribunal handed down harsh jail terms for 21 mostly Shiite activists for allegedly plotting to overthrow the regime, including the 13 activists at Tuesday&#8217;s hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Ten months later, Bahrain&#8217;s highest appeals court ordered a retrial in the case of all 21 activists.<\/p>\n<p>Bahrain came under strong criticism from international rights organisations over last year&#8217;s crackdown on the Shiite-led demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p>An international panel commissioned by King Hamad to probe the government&#8217;s clampdown found out that excessive force and torture had been used against protesters and detainees.  <a href=\"http:\/\/m.dailystar.com.lb\/Article.aspx?id=175022\" target=\"_blank\"> &#8230;source<\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"igit_tsb_button\" style=\"float: left; margin-right: 10px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.crookedbough.com%2F%3Fp%3D10302&amp;text=Bahraini+activists+ask+appeals+court+for+freedom+-+al-Khawaja+refuses+to+attend+hearing&amp;count=horizontal&amp;via=\" style=\"\" class=\"twitter-share-button\">Tweet<\/a><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bahraini activists ask appeals court for freedom 29 May, 2012 &#8211; Agence France Presse DUBAI: Two Bahraini opposition activists facing life terms for plotting to overthrow the Sunni monarchy told an appeals court on Tuesday they were &#8220;tortured&#8221; in detention and asked to be freed, their lawyers said.
